The name "joule thief" is a play on words. A jewel thief steals gems, and the joule thief circuit "steals" electrical power. A joule is essentially a measure of electrical work. Why is the circuit stealing joules? Generally, when a AA battery drops below 1.3 volts, it is unusable in most electronics. However, the joule thief circuit can make use of the low voltage to light the led!
